Is it ok to replace "nearby" with "near" in this sentence? Could you give me some example sentences using "near" and "nearby" in different meanings?
"Near" is always used with a location marker. Ex: It's near my middle school. Ex: I live near my workplace. Meanwhile, "nearby" is used on its own. Ex: The store is nearby. Ex: I live nearby. Thus, "near" can only be used in this context if it is followed by words relating to location or place also. Ex: Predators may be sniffing around near her nest. Ex: Predators may be sniffing around nearby.
