What's the different between "sole" and "only"? Can I say "only purpose" here?

The words "sole" and "only" express the same meaning. You could replace "sole" with "only" here, however, it would sound better to say "sole purpose" because this is a common phrase. Ex: My sole purpose is to make him happy on his birthday. Ex: The company's sole purpose is to make money.
