Are "stare at" and "look at" the same?

They are similar in definitions, but they do not have the same meaning. "Stare" does indeed mean to look at, however, it is much more intense than that. To stare at someone means to look at someone or something for a long period of time with your eyes wide open. Synonyms for stare would be to gaze or glare. Ex: Why is he staring at me? Ex: Stop staring at me! It's freaking me out. Ex: She keeps staring at the clock.
