A "life raft" is usually a small, inflatable raft that is circular or square. Life rafts do not have a motor and just inflate for the purpose of providing flotation in an emergency. A "life boat" is generally bigger than a life raft, and they do not need to be inflated. Most life boats are made of plastic or some sturdy material that is harder to break than a life raft, so they are safer than life rafts. However, life rafts are easier to bring along on a ship because they can be stored in a very compact size, whereas life boats cannot be folded and made smaller.
