Why is "down" being used after "nothing"? Is it ok to replace "down" with "in"?

The preposition "down" is used here because he is looking at the bottom of his screen in the "downward" direction. It would not sound quite as correct to replace "down" with "in" here, because his character is outside in the game and not "in" anything. However, you could replace "down" with "over" or "around" here.
