Native speaker’s answer

Rebecca

Prior to this sentence the narrator lists some extreme weather (drought, melting polar ice caps, etc). This list of extreme weather is what he is referring to as "they". He is saying that the extreme weather he listed is a result of the temperature of the world changing by 1 degree. Ex: I forgot my jacket, as a result I was freezing. People can be a result of something but usually a situation. It is not a common way to refer to people. Ex: I have two sons. They are a result of my first marriage. Ex: The way she behaves and her attitude is a result of society's influence.
