"Good boy" is usually used to compliment animals or children. It is better to not say it to adults, as it can be seen as offensive or mocking to that person. Ex: Good boy! Go fetch that ball for me. Ex: Be a good boy and help mommy wash the dishes.

I am unsure what it's like in other countries, but in the United States, students are enrolled in certain classes, and teachers will have a list of their students for each specific class.
