I think "I was once again" sounds better than "I am once again." But which one sounds more natural?

This entire sentence is in present tense because he is referring generally to situations which continue to occur, and so "I am once again is used" in this case. If you wanted to change this to "I was once again", it would sound unnatural unless the entire sentence was in the past tense. Even though he is describing an event which has already happened, it is still occurring in the future and so he uses present tense. Thus, "I am once again" sounds the most natural here.
