Can I say “Sorry for that” instead of "sorry about that"? Does it mean the same?

"Sorry about that" and "sorry for that" have slightly different meanings. "Sorry about that" usually means "I feel sad because that happened to you". "Sorry for that" is apologizing for something you did wrong. Ex: I heard you lost your job, sorry about that. Ex: I messed up the paperwork, sorry for that.
