When can I use the expression "sold out"? I thought I can use "sold out" to only item in a store.

The expression "sold out" can be used to refer to any items that were for sale, but have all been purchased. Here, "sold out" is used because all of the tickets for the concert they are discussing have been purchased. Ex: The shoes I wanted are sold out. Ex: I wanted to see that movie, but the tickets were sold out.
