student asking question

Is it acceptable to call someone by their initials? Why did Evan just call them like that? Wouldn't it be too rude?

If you are familiar with the person and they are fine with you calling them by their last initial or initials, because they have a difficult name or because it is more familiar, then it is acceptable. If you do not know the person or are unsure about whether you can call them by their initials, call them by their full name. Most people who go by their initials will tell you that you can call them by their initials.
