Is "out" necessary in "test out"? What is different between just "test" and "test out"?

"Test out" here is a phrasal verb. Some phrasal verb forms have very different meanings than the original form of the verb but "test out" and "test" have the same meaning and can pretty much be used interchangeably. So the "out" in "test out" is not necessary here. The only main difference between "test" and "test out" is that "test out" can sometimes express that something is being tested for a longer duration of time. However in this video, this does not seem to be the case. Ex: He is testing out the job market by applying to all kinds of jobs. Ex: I am renting this car so I can test it out and see if it's worth buying.
