Yes. Here "brunch" is kind of being used as a metaphor. He is saying that he doesn't understand people in a similar way that he doesn't understand why the idea of "brunch" exists. As you know "brunch", is a meal between breakfast and lunch so, I guess he is saying why not just have breakfast, or why not just have lunch. What is the point of brunch; he doesn't understand it. In that same way he doesn't understand people and so finds it difficult to make friends. Ex: Let's meet for brunch tomorrow. Ex: It's too late for breakfast, let's just do brunch.
