Native speaker’s answer

Rebecca

This is a good question. Because the speaker is categorizing the houses in order of construction, he has chosen to say "house number one," "house number two," and so on. When he says "third is house number three," "the" is not used for two reasons. It is common for native speakers to drop words like the subject "I" or "it" and "the" when speaking casually. Additionally, when specifying a list of things in order (first, second, third; firstly, secondly, thirdly), "the" is not used. Ex: The weather is so cold. -> Weather is so cold. Ex: First, we prepare the cooking ingredients.
