Good question! There are lots of different words used to classify groups of different animals and insects. A "swarm" is generally used to refer to a large group of insects, especially flying insects. Ex: They were attacked by a swarm of bees. Ex: A large swarm of flies came out from the grass. A "herd" on the other hand is used to classify a group of animals, especially hoofed animals, which move around and migrate together. Ex: The herd of deer is grazing on the hillside. Ex: A large herd of horses is running.
