Should I use "they" to refer to "someone"? I thought "someone" is one person.

"They" is usually specific, but it can also be a generic third-person singular pronoun in English. So it can be used to refer to "someone" whose gender is irrelevant or unknown. In this way, it is often used to refer to a singular person in a very general context. Ex: If someone is allergic to something, they may have a severe negative reaction to it.
