What's the difference between “sprinkle” and “spread”?

"Sprinkle" and "spread" are very different actions. "Sprinkle" means to drop a small amount of something onto something else, while spread in this context means to smear something onto something else. Ex: Sprinkle some flour on the counter so the dough doesn't stick to it. Ex: Smear frosting all over the cake.
