The word "engagement" refers to an event that has a fixed time and place to meet. An "engagement" has the same meaning as an "appointment", but "engagement" is normally used for social gatherings. An "appointment", on the other hand, is generally used for more professional meeting events, like work meetings or visits to the doctor. Ex: I have a dentist appointment on Wednesday. Ex: They made an appointment with the lawyers. Ex: The wedding engagement was beautiful. Ex: We have a dinner engagement to attend tomorrow night.
