Why does he put and adjective (unannounced) after the verb (come) instead of an adverb?

"Unannounced" can be used as both adjective and adverb. In this sentence, "unannounced" is used as an adverb meaning "suddenly and unexpectedly." It is used a lot with verbs that are related to appearance. Ex: He just turned up unannounced on my door. Ex: She appeared unannounced and took control of the meeting. Ex: They turned up unannounced at around 7 pm. Remember that not all adverbs end in -ly form. Thanks for the great question!
