A "vigilante" is a person or persons who voluntarily take an initiative to stop and punish people that are committing crimes. Spider-Man and many other superheroes are considered vigilantes because they are trying to stop and punish people who are breaking the law and causing terror; they want to keep their cities and the people within them safe. A vigilante is usually unpaid for this service and his or her identity is usually unknown to the public. Ex: The vigilante stopped the bank robber. Ex: The group of vigilantes patrolled the streets to find the kidnapper. Ex: I never thought she would be a vigilante and protect our neighborhood.
