A hyphen is used to join two words together that collectively function as an adjective used to describe a noun. Here, "skunk" and "butt" are both nouns, but when a hyphen is put in between them, it creates "skunk-butt", which becomes an adjective used to describe the rug. This can apply to any two words, however, it doesn't work when one of the words is an adverb. Here's a few more examples of when hyphens are use: Ex: These cookies are rock-hard. Ex: She lives in a pet-friendly apartment. Ex: He is a well-known actor.
