Native speaker’s answer

You are correct, "inhale" is generally used to refer to the act of breathing in air. However, it is sometimes used to add an effect of exaggeration to the act of consuming something, usually food. In this case, the speaker says "I inhaled the book" to emphasize how quickly she finished the book. The verb "devour" is also used in a similar way. Ex: I was so hungry, I inhaled the entire cake. Ex: I devoured the entire book in a day.
