Why did he use "a pair of" expression there? Can I just say "you can make yourself a paste pant"?

He uses "a pair of pants" here because when we refer to pants, we always call them "a pair". This is because originally, pants were separate and held together by a belt, so there were two of them. So today, we still call them "a pair of pants".
