"Ash" and "cinder", what's the difference?

A "cinder" refers to a small fragment of wood or coal that has been burned and is no longer on fire but still has the potential to burn. "Cinders" are usually larger than "ashes" as "ash" refers to the powder that is left by something which has been burned. Ex: Put the pan on the hot cinders. Ex: Only the ashes remain in the fire pit.
