To "work one's way through school" means to pay for your own schooling, usually university. In the United States, going to college is very expensive, and many students have to pay for it themselves. To do this, they need to get jobs so that they can pay for their tuition. Ex: She had to work her way through school by getting three jobs. Ex: I worked my way through school.
