"If not for" se puede utilizar solo. No es una abreviación, sino que es similar en significado y función a "if it were not for", "were it not for", "if it was not for" y "was it not for". Se utilizan estas expresiones con el significado de "in the absence of, [something] would have happened" (si no hubiera sido por [X], [algo] hubiera pasado.) Ej: "If it wasn't for my father's quick reflexes, we would have gotten into an accident." (Si no fuera por los rápidos reflejos de mi padre, hubiéramos tenido un accidente.) Ej: "If it weren't for my bad math scores, I would have gotten into a better university." (Si no fuera por mis malas notas en matemáticas, hubiera entrado en una universidad mejor.)
