What is the difference between “war” and “battle”?

The word "battle" can have the same meaning as "war", however, a "war" usually happens on a bigger scale than a "battle". The word "battle" often is used to refer to a fight between at least two people, while "war" usually refers to a more strategic and planned out fight between bigger groups like entire nations or countries.
