"Contend with" has a meaning similar to "deal with" or to "strive against" (in terms of a competition or difficult situation). It is usually used to describe unpleasant or negative situations, like in this video here. Ex: The superhero has to contend with not one, but two super villains. Ex: She has to deal with not one, but two perplexing mysteries.
