Is "battlefield" different from "battleground"?

In common usage, "battlefield" and "battleground" mean the same thing, a location where a battle is, will be, or has been fought. It may not necessarily be an actual field, and can be used to metaphorically refer to a location. Ex: The courtroom was my battleground, and the opposing side's lawyer was my enemy. Ex: The battlefield was littered with discarded uniforms and weapons.
