What does "yonder" mean? Is it used often?

"Yonder" is an older English word that means "over there." It isn't commonly used in normal conversation. It is only used when someone is trying to sound formal. I am unsure if this is commonly used in British English, but it's not a commonly used word in American English. Ex: The house is just down yonder. Ex: My favorite store is in the town yonder.
