If you can imagine the taste of foods like mushrooms, anchovies, some types of mature cheeses, and food seasoned with MSG, you can imagine what "umami" tastes like. Ex: Rather than spicy or sweet foods, I prefer food with an umami taste. Ex: Some people describe umami as a "meaty" or "broth-y" flavor.
