“So as to” is an idiomatic phrase, which means "in order to" perform some kind of action. In this case, he killed himself in order to join his wife. "So as to" has to be followed by an infinitive verb form to be grammatically correct. Ex. I wear a helmet when I ride my bike, so as to avoid hurting myself.
