They may have removed "her" because it's not necessarily needed here. To a native English speaker, it's understood that the family Gia is with is her own. Even without "her," we can still understand the meaning of the sentence. They may not have used "her" because shortening the sentence saves time for the news station. Timing is crucial in the news. These stations are only allotted so much time for each segment. Shortening a sentence can help keep the segment under the time limit.
