What's the difference between "stop" and "halt"?

"Stop" and "halt" are essentially the same. "Halt" is more formal than "stop" and isn't commonly used. Many will use "halt" in a joking manner. Ex: You there, stop! Ex: Halt, you heathen! Ex: I told you to stop talking. Ex: Halt thief!
