Asking someone what their "story" is like asking what their background is and where they came from. If you ask someone for their "story" is it usually because you want to get to know them better or you want a shortened version of who they are. This expression can be used when meeting someone for the first time, although a lot of people probably don't like to answer this question because they don't know what to say about themselves since it is a very broad question. So the best time to use this expression is when there is some sort of context involved in where you are meeting a person, like if you are both in a group together and you want to find out how they got there. It is generally a pretty informal expression. Ex: So what's your story? What made you choose to move to Australia? Ex: What's your story? How'd you start working for Google? Ex: What's your story, man? What are you in jail for?
