"Where have you been" is present perfect tense and affects the context of the present, while "where did you go" asks about someone's activities in the past tense. You can use both "where have you been" and "where did you go" to ask where someone was in the recent past, but you cannot use "where have you been" when asking about something that happened distinctly in the past. Ex: You're late for dinner. Where have you been? Ex: You're late for dinner. Where did you go? Ex: I heard you went on vacation last year, where did you go?
