"Wind up" means to arrive or end up in a specified state, situation, or place. "Wind up" means to arrive or "end up" in a specified state, situation, or place. "....wound up teetering on top of a whale statue" means that the train was able to get on top of the whale statue somehow, and it managed to avoid falling. Ex: You wound up in the middle of the action. (You ended up in the middle of the action.) Ex: After graduating college, I would up in NYC. (After graduating college, I ended up in NYC.)
