There is a high chance that the caterpillar track (also known as a continuous track) may have been inspired by caterpillars! However, early versions of this track existed in ancient times as a way to transport things across long distances, so it is difficult to say for sure. However, the caterpillar tracks used for vehicles can be traced back to the 1700s. Certainly, at least the inspiration for the name, was taken from the caterpillar, even if the design wasn't.
