"Slug" is a more old-fashioned word similar to "punch". To "slug" someone means to hit someone hard with your first. However, it is a little bit less strong than "punch", which typically means hitting someone as hard as you can with your fist. To "hit" is the least strong out all of these words, as it usually refers to hitting someone with the palm of your hand instead of with your fist.
