Is "whence" a commonly used word?

Unfortunately not. "Whence" is an old English word that means "where" or "from what place or source." It used to be a more commonly used word, but is no longer the case. The only time "whence" is used anymore is in a joking manner or in way to make one sound intelligent or sophisticated.
