"On the road" can have a few meanings. It can mean just travelling in a vehicle, usually a car, although it is generally used for long distances. It can also be used to mean travelling from place to place for some purpose. Ex: They’re on the road for six months out of every year. Ex: I’ve been on the road since 5:00 a.m. this morning. Ex: My job has me on the road very frequently.
