Could you tell me how to use the expression "is on"?

The whole phrase "the search is on" means "the search has begun". Therefore, "is on" here means "has begun", but is only used in this way when following "the search". Ex: The search is on for a new pair of shoes. Ex: The search for my missing wallet is on.
