A "green card" is a permanent resident card in the United States. In the United States, a "green card" allows a foreign citizen to live and work permanently. A "green card" does not grant U.S. Citizenship, however, it allows someone to be very close to a citizen. The only reason it is known as a "green card" is because that was originally the color of the cards. There are not really any other colored cards that are used commonly.
