Whenever I read a classic folktale, the wolves often appear as main protagonists. Were wolves a serious threat to people back then?

In a way, yes. Many people feared wolves because of their predatory nature. Wolves were more of a threat to people's livestock than a threat to their lives. Wolves would often attack and kill people's livestock for food. Livestock was very important to settlers back then: livestock provided food and transportation for these people. This fear started a campaign to eradicate the wolves, where they became an endangered species. Thankfully, conservation efforts have been made to regrow the depleted wolf population.
