"Expiration date" is a specific date when a product should no longer be used or consumed, regardless of if the product was opened or not. "Best before" is a recommended date that a product should be used or consumed by. Here are some examples. Ex: Cooking oils have a long shelf life. Ex: We can't eat this! It's past its expiration date, we could get sick! Ex: The bread says it is best before the 30th. We probably should use it up before then.
