The expression "a shred of dignity intact" means that someone wants to come out of an awkward situation and still have some of their dignity. In other words, they don't want to be too embarrassed or humiliated throughout the situation. Ex: I had to leave while I still had a shred of dignity intact. Ex: She left the divorce meeting with her dignity intact.
