What's the difference between "role" and "part"? Are they always interchangeable?

"Role" and "part" can sometimes have similar meanings however in this case they would not and are not interchangeable. Here, "role" means a position or a function that something does in a situation. However "part" means a section of something. So if we were to replace "role" with "part" in this sentence it would mean that scrum has three different sections or pieces to it. Whereas "role" tells us there are three functions that scrum has to do or complete. Ex: This document has several parts to it. (Sections) Ex: This document has several roles to play. (Functions) When used to talk about characters however the words "part" and "role" have basically the same meaning and are interchangeable. Ex: This actor can play the part of Othello. = This actor can play the role of Othello.
