As technology progressed, automatic transmission vehicles soon became the standard and using the stick shift to switch gears was no longer necessary. Now, most vehicles are automatic and if you can drive a stick shift, it is considered an impressive skill to have; most people do not know how to drive a stick shift anymore. This is because they aren't as commonly made and it's much easier to drive an automatic vehicle than a manual transmission vehicle.
