student asking question

How come "to make" comes after "a lot"? I thought there should be "of + noun" after "a lot"!

In this particular sentence, the phrase (of work) or (of ingredients) is taken out. The sentence would usually be "It takes a lot of work to make a stew." It is taken out because it is implied that the reader or listener already knows what he or she is talking about. Since this is a song, the writers may have thought that taking out the preposition phrase sounds better than leaving it. In English, words or phrases can be taken out of a sentence if the remainder of the sentence can stand alone. Here are some examples of words or phrases being taken out of sentences. Ex: (Are you) Still awake? Ex: (Are) You okay? Ex: I'm (doing) well.
