Is "if" necessary in here?

The expression "let me see if I got this straight/right" is most commonly used with "if" in the sentence. It would sound slightly awkward and unnatural if the "if" was to be omitted. Ex: Let me see if I got this straight. You got a dog without telling me? Ex: Say it slowly again. Let me see if I'm getting this right.
